both directions at once
“Both Directions at Once” is the name of a long lost John Coltrane album that was unearthed and released in 2018. That same year I moved from Columbus, OH to Portland, OR with my brother Alec. Moving a great length often feels like being torn in two: the promise of new life contrasts against the weight of change. It took us 3 1/2 days to travel 2,439.5 miles in a rusted 1999 Jeep Cherokee on nothing more than a wing and a prayer. With limited resources and all of our possessions packed in the back seat, we overcame bad weather, breakdowns and an acute fear of failure. Through it all I watched God move on our behalf and make way for us to step into a new space of life. The following images are my attempt to capture a personal journey of both distance and spirit. Photographed on gifted rolls of Kodak Tri-X using a Canon F1.
